What exactly is the talc scandal?
As early as the 1970’s Johnson & Johnson knew that its talcum powder products contained asbestos that could cause cancer, and yet continued to sell it to millions of people worldwide.
Quite simply, Johnson & Johnson knew; they lied, and now thousands of us are paying an unimaginable price, and some of life itself; all in the name of profit. Corporate greed at its very worst.
If you or a loved one used Johnson & Johnson talc for over five years and developed cancer, you might be eligible for compensation.
Did Johnson & Johnson know?
It’s hard to believe that a company that used to champion ‘safety first’ would do this. But it’s true.
- Research in the 1970s found traces of asbestos within talcum powder and that continued use of the product could cause ovarian, mesothelioma, fallopian tube, and primary peritoneal cancer
- Despite Johnson & Johnson knowing this, they continued to sell and market their talcum powder products, promoting trust and health.
- They changed the way they manufactured its talcum powder and removed the risk of its containing asbestos in the US in 2020, but didn’t change it in the UK for another 3 years.
- In July 2024, the World Health Organisation issued a warning about the potential cancer risks linked to talcum powder.
They knew. They Lied. We pay the price.
How can such a trusted product, used by millions worldwide, have been so potentially harmful?
We’ve provided answers to some of the most frequently asked questions we have had from our clients as they try to understand why Johnson & Johnson put corporate greed ahead of health and, in some cases, life itself.
What’s happened in the US
Johnson & Johnson has previously set aside more than $6bn to settle ovarian cancer cases in the US, with a further amount of more than $4bn for people diagnosed with mesothelioma. They have recently pledged an additional US$1.1 billion to settle its outstanding talc cases.
