BLOG: Talcum powder cancer. Did you pay the price for Johnson and Johnson’s negligence?
Published on: 8/16/2024
Scientists believe that using talcum powder for a long time may increase the risk of certain cancers. What is talcum powder cancer? Talc is a naturally occurring mineral. It’s mined before being crushed and milled into a fine powder. Talcum powder manufacturers like Johnson & Johnson used this talc in some of their products, including baby powder. Talc is often found and mined near asbestos, so cross-contamination is possible. Asbestos is a well-known carcinogen – meaning it is known to cause cancer. When inhaled, asbestos can cause severe respiratory conditions, such as asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. A significant use of talcum powder can also cause ovarian cancer. One study found that women who use talc regularly have a 36% higher risk of ovarian cancer.
The scientific link between talc and cancer
Although both ovarian cancer and mesothelioma have other causes, leading scientists believe that talcum powder is one cause of these cancers.
- The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified talc contaminated with asbestos as carcinogenic to humans.
- The World Health Organization´s cancer agency has classified talc as "probably carcinogenic" for humans
Johnson & Johnson stopped selling baby powder containing talc in 2023 and switched to a formulation based on corn starch, but this was too little, too late for many people with cancer.
"They knew. They lied. We paid the price"
Many people are coming forward, claiming that talc-based products gave them asbestos-related mesothelioma or ovarian cancer. Sometimes, it´s up to their surviving family members to fight for justice.
At KP Law, we have spoken to many people diagnosed with life-changing and life-limiting cancers following prolonged use of talcum powder. They have told us of their ‘betrayal’ at the hands of the talcum powder manufacturers.
Committed to advocating for those affected, we have launched a no-win-no-fee group action claim against Johnson and Johnson.
Our talcum powder cancer claim
Following several successful talcum powder claims in the US, we are seeking justice for UK cancer victims. By uniting affected individuals, we aim to hold talc manufacturers accountable for the harm caused by their products.
How do you know if you’ve got talcum powder cancer?
If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, ovarian cancer, fallopian tube cancer or peritoneal cancer, and have used talcum powder for five or more years, you may be affected by talcum powder cancer.
For those who consistently used talcum powder and are worried about potential health risks, consulting a medical professional is essential if you develop any of the following symptoms:
Common signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer include:
- Abdominal bloating or swelling
- Pelvic pain or pressure
- Changes in bowel or bladder habits
- Feeling full quickly while eating
- Unexplained weight loss or gain
- Fatigue or low energy levels
- Changes in menstruation or abnormal vaginal bleeding
Common signs and symptoms of mesothelioma include:
- Persistent chest pain in the lower back or side of the chest wall
- Shortness of breath
- Persistent cough
- Fatigue and weakness
- Unexplained weight loss
- Lumps and swelling
- Abdominal pain and swelling
These symptoms are not exclusive to talcum powder cancer and can be caused by other conditions. If you’re experiencing any persistent or concerning symptoms, it’s crucial to consult with your GP for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
Claim compensation for talcum powder cancer
We are pursuing a compensation claim against Johnson & Johnson for several reasons.
- Product liability. Manufacturers have a responsibility to ensure the safety of their products. Johnson & Johnson continued to sell baby powder for years despite knowing its potential cancer risks.
- Negligence. Manufacturers are responsible for exercising reasonable care in producing or marketing their products. Despite emerging scientific evidence, we believe Johnson & Johnson failed to test products or take appropriate action.
- Failure to warn. Manufacturers are responsible for warning consumers of any potential risks associated with their products. Johnson & Johnson failed to warn its customers of the risk of developing talcum powder cancer, so they couldn’t make informed decisions about whether to use the products.
A journey to get justice against Johnson & Johnson
If you or a loved one used Johnson & Johnson talc for over five years and developed cancer, you might be eligible for compensation. We are running this case on a no-win, no-fee basis, so you don’t have to worry about costs.
